BLM Internet Adoption

Adopt This Horse!

The BLM's Internet Adoption is underway, and you won't want to miss it! 151 mustangs gathered from across the western states are ready to come home with you. Well...not all 151 with just one of you (although I'm certain if you've got the facilities we may be able to arrange something!)

The horse I've got pictured here currently has no bids on him. He's four years old, 15.1 hands, and was gathered from Coyote Lakes HMA in Oregon. That's where Quiet Storm was from! You should adopt him. Really, you should. And if you live in the northwest and need transportation, well...here I am, ready and willing to enable...as always!

Now, you may be thinking to yourself, "Self, what would you do with a wild horse?" Well, obviously you've not spent any time reading the Diaries here if you need to ask that, so go back and do your homework. Work cattle, trail ride, trot pretty circles at the horse shows...just a few ideas for you. You may also be wondering, "How the heck would I get the horse home when I don't live in the Pacific Northwest where Desperate can haul for me?" Taken care of:

Pick up options (by appt): Burns, OR; Rock Springs, WY; Elm Creek, NE; Pauls Valley, OK; Ewing, IL.

Other pick up options: Cottage Grove, OR (6/5); Longview, OR (6/11); Rutland, VT (6/12); Woodward, OK (6/18); Joseph, OR (6/19); Green Cove Springs, FL (6/26); New Freedom, PA (7/10); Springdale, AR (7/10).

See? No excuses. Adopt. Save just one.

Damn it, why don't I have a better job so I can afford another horse? Someday, I promise I will adopt more mustangs. He was one of the first ones I looked at on the internet adoption :) Hope he gets adopted.

He has a nice head--eyes nicely set--large nostrils. He looks intelligent.

Hope he finds a new home soon, he looks nice, but why is he so damn thin??

Hi, I live in the completely opposite end of the US (GA) - but have been looking at a horse on the internet adoption site from Burns. So, I may not be able to get the red-dun mare I've been looking at, or bid on any this round (still trying to find someone who will let me set up the 20x20 enclosure - or who already has one - and all that), but how would I get them up to GA if I ever do take the wild plunge into mustangs? The closest drop-off listed is Cove Srpings, FL. And I don't even have a truck, let alone a trailer...

Frog, you'll get there...you'll get there.

Linda, yes, I agree, he does look intelligent.

Hillybilly, Frog and I were down there shortly after these horses came in. A number of them were super thin; this guy looks good compared to what some were looking a few months back. He's proof that there simply isn't enough food out there on the HMA.

Danja, try putting a few ads up on Craigslist in some of the major metro areas in your area; maybe someone else is considering adopting that would be happy to share the ride. Which mare were you looking at?

Oh bummer, the BLM site is down and the photos aren't coming in...

I'll mention your name when I next talk to my Uncle Joe, he'll be happy to hear that you're doing well and still involved with the mustangs! :)

Thanks, I'll try craigslist, but I really haven't seen many Mustangs in Georgia...

I was looking at the 15hh 2 year old dun mare with a dished face. But it looks like she's already getting plenty of bids. I guess I'm not the only one drawn to her.

Too bad that sorrel gelding still hasn't gotten any bids- he has a kind look to him.

Can't do an adoption just yet, but I will pass the word along...

I would love to...once I find my cowboy and we have our ranch/farm/property/.... I hope to adopt a Mustang! :) This apartment dwelling city girl just can't fease another horse right now!

Tracey said...

Ack...apartment dwelling, Pony Girl? I'm so sorry... But even City Boys can be turned around!

Danja, 8756? She's a looker! And only two bids. You could easily get her for under $200, I'll bet. Now, if you're serious, I'm sure I can help find an enabler...er...helpful person in GA for you!

Yes, Rebekah, say hello for me!

Ang, we'll get you into a mustang one of these days :>

I went to a BLM auction a couple years ago, I have always wanted to adopt a Mustang, even as a child! I just don't have all the requirements they want for adopting, ex: no electric, high fences etc, and I won't be able to fix up a spot just yet, but in a couple years, hopefully!
I love the horse that doesn't have any bids! I think he is gorgous! If I could, I would bid on him now!

Paint Girl, you must not have read thoroughly enough...I'm an ebabler. I successfully enabled Froglander in December and would be more than happy to enable you this spring. We'll have the lovely pony sent to my house, I shall make him catchable and you shall have your mustang. The first mustang in the pony cousins...just think about it! You'll be the envy of all the other's, for your wild stallion will no longer by mythical :>

Sure wish I had the space right now. I have a Mexican Mustang and he is the best horse!

I had to go over to the BLM site and there are a few I would love to take home. We have 18 horses.....sigh....I loved a lot of the bays. I am a sucker for a bay. Some of those little mustangs look like they are good little movers!!

So, what happens to them if they don't get adopted? Do they stay around for another round of adoptions?

Tracey said...

Andrea, yes, there are some wonderful movers in the mustang world! They make nice little dressage horses, but are cowy as well. I know one gal who's done everything from dressage to ranch horse versatility on her mustang, and it's the first horse she's ever owned (and did the training herself, to boot!)

Those who get passed on will have one 'strike' against them. Anything that's left in the corrals through the summer will end up being shuffled to another holding facility to make room for more at this one (Oregon, at least, I'm not sure about the others.) If they end up at 3 adoptions and aren't picked up, they end up a sale authority horse, which provides them with no protection from someone who wants to make a quick buck at the slaughter house :( We can thank former Sen. Conrad Burns of Montana for that.
